The Student Government Sustainability Committee aims to create a culture of sustainable development that the entire ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ community is aware of, engaged in, and committed to. Integrating sustainable practices are vital in order to have an environment where humans and nature can coexist, while protecting ecological health, social equity, and economic vitality. The committee advances its mission through education, operations, and community partnerships for sustainable change.

The ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Environmental Issues Group is composed of students who are interested in making the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ community more sustainable in its practices. Some of EIG's goals include:

1. To increase awareness of how students, faculty, staff, and administrators can Go Green.

2. To improve the campus recycling program through more education, improved signage, and greater access to recycling bins throughout campus.

3. To maintain a bike fleet on campus for use by the campus community.

4. To continually identify ways to help make ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ a more sustainable community.Ìý

The Sustainability Committee regularly hosts "Swap Don't Shop" events on campus. These events allow students unwanted clothes & items for new ones, for free. It is a great way for students to reduce their environmental impact, save money, find new outfits, and get rid of unwanted clothing/items.Ìý

The 2023 Ohio Fair Trade Teach-in & Expo will be held at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ on Saturday, October 7th, 2023.Ìý

The Ohio Fair Trade Teach-in & Expo has showcased socially & environmentally conscious consumerism annually since 2009.Ìý

Last year's event at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ was one of the largest regional fair trade events in the country, with guest speakers highlighting the principles of fair trade. There were more than 30 vendors, generating vital income for artisan and farming families by selling fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate, as well as clothing, handcrafts and jewelry. ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ offers student-led Sustainability Retreats annually, led by the Sustainability group. The retreat is a weekend of reflection, nature, and education regarding climate change and sustainability.Ìý

ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ celebrates Arbor Day annually by planting trees on campus. In 2023, we celebrated our goal of reaching 1,000 trees planted across campus, while also representing 100 different tree species.Ìý

The ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ Sustainability group celebrates Earth Week every year by hosting many events on & around campus that are open to all students. Some of the events held for Earth Week 2023 included:

  • Climate Refugee Interactive Discussion
  • Courtyard Cleanup in the Library
  • Swap Don't Shop Event
  • Fair Trade Scavenger Hunt
  • Acacia Reservation Stream Cleanup
  • GESU Fair Trade Festival
  • Documentary showings
