Juneteenth 2022 Programs

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas -- fully two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation -- to formally announce the end of the Civil War, take control of the state, and declare the end of slavery in the last place where people were still being held in bondage. Juneteenth, therefore, marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States.

We will commemorate Juneteenth here at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳ with three community programs during the week of June 20, for our community to learn about the significance of this day and to engage more deeply in the ongoing work of ensuring that all people experience freedom and dignity.

Which events will you attend?
Learn more about the history of slavery, emancipation, and the 150+ year history of the celebration of Juneteenth as a holiday. We will enjoy a casual meal while we watch and discuss a virtual tour of selected exhibits at the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History, narrated by Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III. (THIS PROGRAM IS FULL AND NO LONGER ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS.)
Tower Time "pop up" celebration. In addition to the usual Tower Time beverage offerings, we will have red velvet cupcakes provided by Sweet Fix, a local Black-owned bakery. (RSVP appreciated but not required.)
Join us for breakfast and discussion of the documentary film "13th." In this documentary, scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom. Participants are encouraged to watch the documentary on Netflix (or borrow it from the library) before attending this event. (A few clips from the film will be shown during the event for those who are unable to watch it beforehand.)
